How to Protect Your Computer From Malware (Part 1)

What Is Malware?

You may have heard the term malware before from other users. What most of us know is that this is something we do not want in our computer, but what exactly is it? Simply put, Malware can be any malicious software item that is running in your computer system. This will include things like viruses, Trojan horses, worms, adware, spyware, and rootkits. Often times these get into your system without your knowledge through infected files that you have downloaded or were tricked into downloading. Malware works within the system duplicating itself, accessing your computer, sending information, showing advertisements and hiding unwanted things. Basically, it will connect to the internet and displaying unwanted things intentionally without your knowledge.

Before You Get Started

There is no doubt that you want to protect your computer from Malware; but before you can get started you need to take a very important step-making sure you aren’t already infected. Safe guarding your computer will be useless if you already have an existing malware in your system. You need to make sure that there are no infections before you proceed. Running a scan can help you detect any existing malware that is in the system. You may choose to remove this manually or with the use of software. In case that there are too many infections and they cannot be removed through this method, you may have to reformat your computer. Doing this will remove everything in the main drive and you will have to install your Operating System and all the basic programs again. Once you have made sure that you have cleaned up any possible infections you can then proceed with keeping your computer safe from malware.

Getting Updates

The first thing that you will want to do is to make sure that your system is updated. You can easily do this by downloading Windows Updates. By getting updates you can make sure that your computer stays up to date and that any vulnerability will be fixed. Ideally you will want to use Internet Explorer to download this. However if you are using a browser other than this you will have to use a special tool like Windiz Updates which will help you get what you need. You should be able to see a list of available updates and all you will need to do is download and install these. It may take some time and your screen may flash; do not worry because this is normal and can often happen with the whole process. Once you get your Windows Updates, make sure that you check it regularly and don’t skip out on it.

Computer Viruses – Where They Come From & How to Protect Your Computer

Back in the 90’s, it was relatively safe to surf the Internet without the concern of contracting a computer virus. Today as many as 2,000 new viruses or malicious software (malware) invade the Internet on a daily basis. These computer malware are know by various terms, such as, viruses, trojan’s, spyware, worms, hijackers, rootkits, etc. Malware can interfere with your computer productivity, monitor your Internet activity, steal your logins and passwords, and even destroy your Windows operating system. This can leave you with a computer that is unusable. These Internet attacks are a form of Internet terrorism and unfortunately, all computers are a potential target and need to be protected.

How can a virus get on my computer? One very common way is through email attachments and email links. These email can be addressed from an unknown sender or someone you know and trust. How is that, you ask? Although a friend or family member would not intentionally send you a virus, their infected computer can use their email address list to send out infected email. If you’re not expecting an attachment, sometimes it’s wiser not to click on it. If there is an Internet link in the email, hover the mouse over the link and read the link address in the lower left of the email message to see where it is going to take you. When in doubt, don’t click on the link, as it might take you to an infected website.

The majority of the viruses and spyware, we remove, are contracted by downloading free music, movies, software and games, using what is called, a P2P or peer-to-peer program. There are 20+ free P2P programs that exist, such as, Limewire, Ares, uTorrent, BitTorrent, and eMule, to name just a few. When you use a P2P to download free “stuff”, you might be downloading “free” viruses too. In addition, a P2P program allows others access to your computer to upload what you have downloaded. If you have one of these P2P programs on your computer, we recommend uninstalling it while your computer is still healthy. If your not sure you have a P2P installed, give us a call. Computer PC Medic’s Fort Collins computer repair technicians can remove any P2P’s and all malware.

WARNING: If you see message boxes, of unknown origin, soliciting a response from you or a new antivirus scanner on your desktop, DO NOT click on any messages or buy any antivirus products from it. Your computer is being compromised and is at the beginning of the infection process. Turn your computer off and call your favorite computer repair technician.

Automotive Scan Tool Software

Automotive scan tools are actually small computers run by programs like all other computers. Computers themselves, when demythologized, emerge from the fog as remarkably simple devices that think in 1’s and 0’s. They’re not that smart. The true “intelligence” and complexity of any machine ALWAYS lies with the program within. When purchasing automotive scan tools and software, evaluate first the frequency with which you either personally or professionally encounter technological and mechanical change, and choose automotive scan tools with software upgrade options that will adapt an existing unit to new industry developments without requiring unit replacement with each advance in technology.

Pro-link scan tools and software offer you countless benefits in application and upgrade capabilities. Keynote features range from diesel engine fault ECU input monitoring, programmable EEPROM data, and comprehensive database storage of all proprietary OEM specifications. Pro link scan tool software packages offer comprehensive diagnostics on Detroit Deisel DDEC I/II electronic engine controller systems, Bendix ABS and ATC systems, Volvo VED 12systems, and even Mack Trucks with V-MAC II and Marine engine troubleshooting for boats! Each of these Pro link software packages proactively anticipates the many complex problems that can arise from increasingly complex technology. You can also expect to benefit from specific diagnostic capabilities such as ECU input and output status monitoring, displayed data parameters in either English or metric readout, user-created custom data lists, and clear diagnostic fault codes and compression testing options.

The first time buyer normally asks the obvious and intelligent question, “When do I know it’s time to upgrade my pro link scan tool software?” Need and circumstance determine upgrade requirements more than any generic feedback can advise. Personal vehicle owners normally upgrade their automotive scan tool with new software when they purchase their next vehicle. Professionals face more variables and greater frequency of upgrade because they service multiple vehicles of diverse make and model, and they face industry changes every day as a standard course of business.

Each time the government requires a new safety feature and issues a set of safety compliance standards regulating its performance, vehicle technicians will need to upgrade pro-link scanning tools with software that can effectively diagnose safety devices and proactively identify potential malfunctions. If you run a service shop, make especially certain that your automotive scan tool software reflects the latest safety compliance laws. Not only must you observe these standards due to governing authority, but the problematics of insurance can only harm your business if you neglect to upgrade your software and later find yourself held liable for an accident outdated technology failed to prevent. Please do not assume that this cannot happen to you because it already has to someone in the world today. It does not, however, have to repeat itself in your personal world or the lives of your clients.

It simplifies life and better serves outcome to simply upgrade automotive scan tool software anytime you learn of a feature that specifically addresses a change or new type of problem you encounter. Automotive scan tool software loads into the unit via CD or a plug and play card similar to software and expansions cards on PC’s and laptops. The process is simple. The results will astound you and serve you well.

Using Extension Ladders Safely

The extension ladder is one of the most commonly used tools by technicians and tradesman. Because of its popularity it is also, unfortunately responsible for many of the work related accidents that occur each year. But extensions are not dangerous if used correctly and many of the incidents that occur each year in their use can be prevented.

Why use an extension ladder

Extension ladders are an incredibly useful, practical and efficient tool. There is no better and more efficient way at working at height than with an extension. Extendible to many times there original length, you can erect, scale and work at height in minutes with an extension. The alternatives, such as using scaffold towers and cherry picker cranes are either too expensive, time consuming to erect – or both.

When to use an Extension Ladder

Not every job that requires working at height needs an extension ladder. Often, when working at low height a step-ladder will suffice. Roof ladders can often be used to work down to a height too, so assess what type of ladder the job in hand requires.

How to use and Extension Ladder

There are five steps to using an extension ladders safely:

* Inspect – the ladder should be inspected all over for bends, cracks, buckling or any other faults. Pay particular attention to the feet and rungs. The area you are working on should also be inspected. Make sure it is flat and even. It should also be free from loose gravel stones or dirt. Make sure there is room to work in too.

* Erect – extend the ladder as required. Don’t over extend there should be a block to ensure you don’t extend to high. If there is not, ensure you leave several rungs for safety. When erecting against the wall ensure you have a good angle. Too steep and the ladder could topple; too shallow it could slip.

* Footing – Get someone to foot the ladder if possible. Ensure the feet of placed level and the ladder is not liable to slip or topple.

* Climbing – keep three points of contact as you climb up. Tools should be in belt or hauled up afterward, never climb with your hands full.

* Working – Make sure you don’t work too high. Make sure there are three rungs a head of you for and holds. Don’t reach out and secure tools if necessary. Work calmly, don’t make any sudden or violent movements which could cause the ladder to sway.

Data Recovery Tools – The 4 Main Options

As our computer systems grow and our Internet connections remain constant, there are more and more reasons to need data recovery tools all the time. New viruses, complicated hard drive systems and hard backup solutions all increase the chance of losing the files we save on our computer systems. With the changes in the world of saved data, the data recovery tools have also changed and at times not for the better. Let us take a look at the utilities available for file recovery.

The FREE Software Option

We all understand by now that the Internet is a marketing and money making tool. When you search for data recovery software and services, you will find thousands of search results. Some of these results are links to FREE software that will “recover” your missing data. But, the consumer must be warned. Those free software programs do not work in all cases of data loss. Most often they only work for files that have been accidentally deleted or lost in the hard drive somewhere. If the files are lost to some more intricate reason, these FREE tools can lose all of the file information and render it impossible to regain.

The PAID Software Option

Paid recovery software can do so much more than the free, or undelete software on the market. The normal prices will range from $75.00 to more than $100.00. Even though the price may seem high, these software programs can do so much more than any free software.

The Send Away Option

Yet another data recovery option is the send out. Some companies will ask you to remove your hard drive and send it to a recovery center. Here, the files will be located on the drive and restored for the consumer. But, there is a scam awaiting with this option as well. Some services that require send out are only middle men. They drive the price of the recovery up and you send your drive to a center – they are essentially working for as a marketer.

The Technician Option

The final option is the in person technician visit. This data recovery option is the most secure, but will often be the most expensive. Local technicians will often require 48 hours or more to find the files and restore them from the broken data system.

When you are in the middle of a data loss, the data recovery tools available will vary just as much as the reasons you lost those files in the first place. While the easiest form of data recovery is software, it may not be the best choice in some cases. When in doubt, study each data recovery utility and choose for yourself.
